Lactation starts in pregnancy and is a physiological process which unfolds after birth and in the immediate postpartum period. As such it is natural and both mother and babies have instincts and reflexes which are geared towards breastfeeding.

However ,the way mum positions the baby and the way baby attaches to the breast are entirely learned skills. What works for the mum baby dyad is specific to them and them alone, as long as mum is comfortable and baby is getting plenty of milk, breastfeeding can take many forms.

Often small changes in the way baby is positioned can make a big difference to the way they latch.

Talking about the birth and being mindful of mum’s pregnancy and post-partum circumstances can provide answers to feeding problems.

Newborns are not easy and the early days can be very intense as everything revolves around feeding so when feeding issues arise it can really cloud the early postpartum period.

As a lactation consultant I offer practical guidance as well as emotional support.
By observing a feed and trying to get to the bottom of what’s going on we can together work out how to move forward.
